Older… Not Old: A Friendly Look in the Mirror

November 17, 2025
When I look in the mirror, the reflection staring back at me doesn’t seem that old. In fact, on a good day, I’d say I look pretty darn good. Sure, I’m aging—but at a very respectable, slower-than-average pace, thank you. I still look forward to all kinds of physical activities that keep me fitter, happier, and much more social.
But here’s the real question: Is my mirror lying to me?
Because when I look at myself in that mirror, it’s a pleasant experience. Yet when someone takes a photo of me—oh boy—I find myself hunting for the delete button before the camera app even finishes processing the image. They say the mirror shows you the version of yourself you believe you are, while a photo shows you how others see you. Personally, I vote that the camera is the liar and the mirror is the all-seeing, all-knowing truth-teller. End of debate.
You know how it goes—you see friends or family your age and think, “Wow, they really look older,” and secretly thank the aging gods that you’ve managed to outrun time just a little better. Then, of course, you stumble across photos of yourself from 40 years ago and think, Wow… I liked all of these. No glasses. No grey hair. No thinning hair. No strange new hairs showing up in places they were never invited. Skin was tight. Energy was high. And the bathroom breaks were… well, far fewer.
Yes, I move a little slower now. I turn the TV up a little louder. I rest a little more often. I spend less time brushing my hair (for obvious reasons). And, yes, I pee a little more. But I earned all of this by sticking around long enough—and none of it stops me from dancing whenever possible, exercising most days, or diving into the wide variety of activities that keep life fun.
Aging is simply what happens when you keep living—a very worthwhile goal, if you ask me. But attitude? That’s where you get a choice. You have to get older, but you don’t have to get old.
You can take courses, learn new skills, or finally embark on those adventures you never had time for. Social activities become even more special when shared with friends—old and new. Travel can fit any budget, and hobbies are whatever you want them to be: building a model car, tackling a giant puzzle, or even restoring a full-sized classic automobile if you’re feeling ambitious.
And when I eventually retire, maybe I’ll finally take those golf and tennis lessons I clearly need. (My swing is currently more “experimental art” than “sport.”)
So enjoy the time you’ve earned. Stay active—physically, socially, and intellectually. Keep laughing. Keep moving. Keep learning.
And most of all, let everyone know…
You are Older, Not Old.
