Winter Approaches

November 5, 2025

Living in Canada is a privilege and comes with certain non tropical aspects, like WINTER. Yes, winter exists in tropical locations as well but winter’s biggest characteristic is SNOW. Summer is filled with awesome outdoor activities including, bike riding, tennis, pickleball, swimming, hiking, walking, kayaking, etc, etc, etc. It is very easy to be active on a warm sunny day but now that it is starting to get dark in the afternoon (instead of after 9:00 pm) one needs to start making plans for staying active as the weather turns. Snow shoveling is off my list (see earlier heart attack blog). Most of the above activities are available in the winter but I can’t provide an option for kayaking. Walking in an indoor mall is a great free option and swimming, tennis, pickleball and more are available at indoor facilities. Condos generally provide a gym or pool and the same can be said of retirement homes and communities.

More options are available when the snow falls including downhill and cross country skiing and snowshoeing. Walking is still a great outdoor option and many summer hiking trails are still available in the winter but I would recommend suitable footwear including some variety of spikes on the bottom of your boots. I am fortunate enough to have a treadmill and stationary bike in my basement as well as some dumbbells for strength training. I won’t be in any bodybuilding competitions but I can open my own jars. Of course, not all winter activities have to involve many layers of clothing. Board games, puzzles (I love sudoku), or joining a book club can keep your mind sharp.
So whether you’re walking, swimming, or snowshoeing your way through the season, remember — being active isn’t about age, it’s about attitude. After all, we’re Older, not Old.
