A Senior Moment
Pets, Paws, and Staying Young at Heart đŸ
January 14, 2026
Pets have an uncanny ability to keep us active without ever calling it âexercise.â They donât care if your knees crack louder than bubble wrap or if you now make a sound every time you sit down.
Dogs donât say, âYou should really get your steps in today.â They simply stare at you⊠intensely⊠while holding a leash in their mouth. Cats? They ensure youâre getting your squats in by knocking things onto the floor. Repeatedly.
Before you know it, youâve walked around the block, bent down twenty times, and climbed the stairs more than you planned â all without setting foot in a gym or wearing matching workout gear.
Movement sneaks in when itâs attached to joy. You are also never alone when you have a pet to love and unconditionally love you back. Your home is never empty and someone relies on you for their whole world. I canât list all the people I would interact with on my daily walks in the neighborhood. That said, freezing rain, thunderstorms, sub zero temperatures and occasional pain can make the walks daunting sometimes. We lost our dog of 15 years (Maggie) in August and the hole in our world is still huge while we continue to mourn the loss. I walk less (still keep active in other ways), hate coming home to an empty house and see and hear her everywhere. I am starting to volunteer at a dog rescue shelter to walk and cuddle dogs and get my âfixâ.
Pets arenât for everyone but the positives are immense and the rewards unlimited. Maggie filled our home with love, fun, love, companionship, love, joy and love. Exercise wasnât exercise but hours a day of fun and we loved keeping Maggie happy and healthy as well.
In the end, pets donât just keep us moving â they keep us open. Open to routine, to connection, to laughter, and sometimes to loss. The movement, the companionship, and the joy arenât separate things; theyâre all part of the same gift. Maggie may no longer be walking beside us, but sheâs still moving us forward in ways that matter. And if that love needs somewhere to go, sometimes it finds a new path â through memories, through volunteering, or simply through opening your heart to another wagging tail. Because staying active isnât always about steps or reps. Sometimes, itâs about staying young at heart long after the leash is put away. đŸ
